PHA’s Unsung Heroes Project:

Appreciating Caregivers in Senior Residential Communities

during COVID-19

On July 16, 17 and 20, PHA presented $60 gift cards to every caregiver working at four different senior residential communities in Greater Phoenix.  Our goal was to recognize the essential and demanding work of caregivers in skilled nursing, assisted living and memory care communities, especially now during the COVID-19 pandemic.  In fulfilling one part of our mission, to contribute to tikkun olam – repair of the world, PHA took on this project to shine a well-deserved light on these unsung heroes.  As you will see in the photos and news coverage, presenting the gift cards to almost 300 caregivers was deeply appreciated and heartwarming for all involved.

In barely one month, PHA raised $17,000 for this endeavor through generous donations and assistance from Albertsons Safeway, local organizations and Jewish congregations, and more than 100 individuals from Arizona and beyond. Notes of thanks from employees of the senior communities:

“I worked in Friendship Village of Tempe for 14 years now. This is my second home and my residents are my grandmas and my grandpas. When they die half of me dies too.  Recently contracted Covid-19. I was out for 1 1/2 months. I just came back for work and I’m not yet 100%. My supervisor gave me a gift card that came from Phoenix Holocaust Association. I never expected that there are some people who take time to remember us. Thank you very much for the gift card. It will help me a lot.”
